How To Setup Website Backups via FTP/SFTP with CodeGuard
CodeGuard is an incredibly versatile security product – one that can do far more than just create one-click website backups.
You can also backup databases, scan for malware and even take advantage of its Git versioning feature.
But before you can do any of that, you have to set it up. CodeGuard provides two options for adding a website FTP/SFTP.
A quick word of caution before we show you how to set up FTP/SFTP backups. FTP, much like HTTP, transfers information in plaintext.
This opens the window to known exploits and vulnerabilities. We highly advise only using SFTP whenever connecting to your site, including for backups.
Now let’s discuss how to set up website backups via FTP/SFTP with CodeGuard.
2. Select “Add/FTP/SFTP” Website
Enter your FTP Credentials
Enter your website URL and SFTP credentials. If you’re not sure what your FTP/SFTP server is, usually it’s one of these:
— yourdomain.com
—
yourdomain.com
— [your website’s IP address]
When you’ve finished, click “Test Website Connection.”
2. Enter your FTP Credentials
3. Select your Root Directrory
A screen will open prompting you to select your web root directory.
Choose the correct folder and then click the “Select Root Directory” button.
Not sure which directory to select? Look for one of these:
public_html
httpdocs
httpsdocs
yourdomain.com
4. Choose which files to Backup
You’ll need to select which files and folders you want CodeGuard to backup.
If you’re not sure, just select all.
5. Begin
CodeGuard will begin its first backup when you select ‘Begin First Backup.’
You’ve completed the setup for file backups. You should be able to track the progress through the CodeGuard dashboard,
when it’s finished you’ll have the option to tweak configurations.
If your website has a database, you’ll need to setup a backup for it also.
